Brown pelicans are gregarious and live in large colonies called rookeries. When they are searching for food, however, they often go alone. Some pelicans, after receiving a friendly handout from a fisherman or tourist, will hang around a dock day after day waiting for another free meal. Pelicans are approachable and gentle, but they still like to keep at arm’s length from people.

Mike works to bring "Sunday Post" to completion, giving special attention to the bird's posture and detail of its feathers.

A close-up of the finished work in wax.

Here, a real pelican is seen in its natural environment.

Mike watches the bird for hours, taking photographs and memorizing its gestures for what will later become the faithful representation of a brown pelican.
